Frequently Asked Questions

Which form factor should I choose?

We recommend submitting for the form factor that best suits your specific use case. The right choice depends on whether your experience is designed for focused, visual immersion or all-day, contextual utility.
  • Choose wired XR Glasses: to build experiences that leverage spatial elements and 3D content, such as immersive media or multitasking with multiple app windows. This form factor overlays digital content onto the physical world with a focused field of view and is best suited for interactions involving hand tracking or peripheral devices.
  • Choose display or audio glasses: for glanceable, hands-free experiences designed to accompany a user throughout their day. This form factor is ideal for conversational experiences, real-world navigation, or delivering timely, helpful information that enhances daily life without obstructing it. These rely primarily on voice interaction and touchpad inputs.
If you have distinct ideas for wired XR glasses (immersive experiences) and audio or display glasses (augmented experiences), please submit separate applications for each.

Are applications limited to the listed verticals?

While priority is given to projects within the core verticals, we welcome any innovative application that demonstrates a clear use case for Android XR. If your project falls outside these categories but offers a unique way for users to interact with their environment, we encourage you to apply.

Who owns the Intellectual Property (IP)?

You retain full ownership of your Intellectual Property. The program is designed to support your development and help you scale your own unique solutions within the Android XR ecosystem.

What happens after I submit my application?

Once the application window closes, all submissions undergo a multi-stage review process. You will be notified of your selection status via email no later than July 15, 2026. Selected participants will then move into the onboarding phase, which includes signing program agreements and receiving development kits.

How are recipients selected?

Applications are reviewed by a cross-functional team at Google. Projects are evaluated based on several factors, including, but not limited to, vertical alignment, developer readiness, and a clear articulation of funding requirements.

How is funding distributed?

Non-recoupable grants are awarded at different levels based on stated need and availability. Once selected, applicants will be notified of the final award amount and can choose to accept or decline. Funding is awarded based on key development milestones, including, but not limited to, signed agreements, technical design, and publishing in Google Play.

What tools do I use to build for Android XR?

If you are building for audio or display glasses, you can create augmented experiences with the Jetpack XR SDK and Android Studio. Game engine support is not currently available for audio or display glasses.
If you are building for wired XR glasses (XREAL's Project Aura), you can create immersive experiences with Jetpack XR SDK and Android Studio, Unity, Godot or Unreal Engine.
